Key dates, confirmed by Goldback: preorders opened 11 August 2026. Both series officially launched 25 August 2026. California Phase 1 has three denominations; the refreshed Utah series has eight.

Key takeaways
  • Both series have launched. Goldback dated the official launch of California Phase 1 and the refreshed Utah series to 25 August 2026 in its launch article of that date. Preorders had opened on 11 August 2026.
  • California Phase 1 is three denominations only: ¼, 1 and 5. "Phase 1" implies more later, but Goldback has not said what or when.
  • The refreshed Utah series is the full eight: ¼, ½, 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 — with updated artwork and virtues throughout.
  • Preorder labelling has mostly, but not entirely, gone from Alpine's listings. A rendered check of each product page on 28 August 2026 found twelve of the thirteen California and refreshed Utah launch listings showing ordinary shipping wording, and one — the 2 Utah denomination — still carrying pre-order shipping wording in its own Shipping Details section. That is a point-in-time observation of one dealer, not a stock or supply guarantee. Pricing, labelling and availability move, so check the live listing for the exact note you want rather than any figure or status quoted here or anywhere else.
  • This is not the same as the LER. The California 3 Limited Early Release is a separate graded collectible at $299 — a different product entirely.
  • No mintages have been published for any of these. Anyone quoting scarcity figures is not citing Goldback.

The Confirmed Dates

Goldback published the announcement on 12 August 2026, stating:

"Preorders for phase 1 of the California Goldback Series and the refreshed Utah Goldback Series are officially open as of August 11, 2026! Both series will officially launch on August 25, 2026."

That settles a question that had been circulating on dealer and community pages for weeks without a first-party source. Until this announcement, the August dates were unverified chatter. They are now confirmed by the issuer.

Goldback then published its launch article on 25 August 2026, stating:

"Two major Goldback releases officially hit the market on August 25th: Phase 1 of California and the Utah Relaunch!"

The same article reports the merchant network behind them: "California has over 260 local merchants, and Utah has over 870 to date!" Those are Goldback's own directory figures as published on 25 August 2026 — issuer-reported listings, not an audited count of businesses currently accepting, and merchant acceptance is voluntary everywhere.

Why the ¼ Exists, and What It Signals Next

The ¼ Goldback appearing in both series is not incidental. Goldback explained the reasoning in its 23 March 2026 announcement discontinuing the 100 Goldback:

"To better support our mission of making an affordable, practical gold currency, future series will focus on lower denominations—like the new 1/4 Goldback. The 1/4 will be included in upcoming launches, including phase 1 of California and the Utah and Nevada refreshes."

Two things worth drawing out of that sentence.

The strategy is deliberate. Goldback is moving toward smaller denominations and away from the largest one. It gave a plain reason: the 100 Goldback had come to represent over half the cost of collecting a full series, having launched around $500 and since exceeded $1,000 as gold rose. Dropping it lowers the cost of a complete set; adding the ¼ lowers the cost of entry.

A Nevada refresh is coming. That same sentence names "the Utah and Nevada refreshes" — plural. Utah's launched on 25 August 2026. Nevada's has not been announced, and no date, denomination list or artwork has been published for it. But Goldback has confirmed in writing that one is planned.

What Is Actually in Each Series

California Phase 1 — Three Denominations

DenominationVirtue
¼ GoldbackJustitia (justice)
1 GoldbackDiligentia (diligence)
5 GoldbackAbundantia (abundance)

The word "Phase 1" is doing real work here. California is launching with three denominations while Utah gets eight. Goldback has not published what a later phase would contain, or when it might arrive. If you want a California 10, 25 or 50, there is no announced date for one.

Refreshed Utah — the Full Eight

¼ · ½ · 1 · 2 · 5 · 10 · 25 · 50

Goldback describes this as the full lineup "with updated artwork and virtues." This is a refresh of an existing series, not a new state — which matters if you already hold Utah Goldbacks, since the legacy notes remain what they are and the refreshed designs are separate artwork.

The California Artwork

Goldback published full descriptions for each denomination. The UV layer carries meaning in all three, and it does not appear in product photography.

¼ — Justitia. She raises the scales of justice, resting a gavel atop a stack of books. California poppies and dogface butterflies run through the scene, with Half Dome and El Capitan placing it in Yosemite. Under UV, water fills her scales — illustrating the effort required to uphold liberty and justice. Inscription: "To delay justice is injustice."

1 — Diligentia. A female prospector kneels in the waters of Sutter's Mill in Coloma, panning the river, a gold nugget in her hand. Under UV, more nuggets glimmer beneath the water. A grizzly bear from the state flag stands behind her. The scene marks the 1848 discovery that began the Gold Rush. Inscription: "Diligence is the mother of good luck."

5 — Abundantia. She stands among the vineyards of Sonoma Valley holding clusters of ripe grapes, with a California quail beside her and Mission San Francisco Solano in the distance — the last and northernmost of the state's twenty-one missions. The UV layer reveals a ladybug for good luck.

Pricing and Availability at Alpine

Checked directly against Alpine Gold's product listings on 26 August 2026. All eleven listings were published on 11 August — the same day Goldback opened preorders — and all three California denominations and all eight refreshed Utah denominations were listed. That check read the product listings rather than each rendered product page, so it records the listings existing, not a per-note labelling result.

California Phase 1 — ¼, 1 and 5 Goldback.

Refreshed Utah 2026 — ¼, ½, 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 Goldback.

The pricing is linear: every denomination in both series is priced from the same per-Goldback rate, so a 5 costs five times a 1. That rate moves with market conditions and carries no published date on the seller's own listing, which is why no figure is quoted here. A price copied from any guide, including this one, can be out of date the same week. Check the live listing at the approved dealer for the current price before you order.

Buy Now or Wait?

An honest read, because the answer is not the same for everyone.

Reasons to buy now: you want a specific denomination and would rather not risk it being unavailable later; you are completing a set; or you want notes from the first production run. These are priced as ordinary Goldbacks, not at a scarcity premium.

Reasons to wait: nothing published guarantees launch supply, and nothing suggests these will be hard to obtain after 25 August. Bear in mind that the per-Goldback rate moves with market conditions in both directions, so waiting is not automatically cheaper or dearer.

What nobody can tell you: whether these will be worth more later. No mintage figures have been published for any of these notes. Without a production number, scarcity claims are guesses. Anyone confidently telling you these will appreciate is not working from published information.

Don't Confuse This with the LER

This trips people up, and the price gap makes it expensive.

The California 3 Limited Early Release is a separate graded collectible, listed at $299 when observed on 26 August 2026. It is not part of Phase 1, not one of the three standard denominations, and not the same purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do California and Utah Goldbacks launch?

25 August 2026, per Goldback's announcement of 12 August. Preorders opened 11 August.

What denominations does California Phase 1 include?

Three: ¼, 1 and 5. Goldback has not announced what a later phase would add, or when.

Why does Utah get eight denominations and California only three?

Goldback has not explained the difference. Utah is a refresh of an established series; California is a new series launching in phases. Beyond that, we would be guessing.

How much do the preorders cost?

Pricing is linear — the same per-Goldback rate applies across every denomination in both series, so a 5 costs five times a 1 — and that rate moves with market conditions. We deliberately do not quote a figure, because a preorder price copied into a guide goes stale quickly and the seller publishes no date alongside it. Check the live listing at the approved dealer for the current price.

Are these Alpha notes?

Alpine lists them as Alpha — the first production run. Alphas carry the same gold content as later printings; scarcity and collector demand are what differ, and neither is guaranteed.

How many will be made?

Unknown. No mintage figures have been published for any denomination in either series.

Is the refreshed Utah series different from my existing Utah Goldbacks?

Yes. Goldback describes the refresh as carrying updated artwork and virtues. Your legacy Utah notes are unaffected and remain what they are.

Will these be worth more later?

Nobody can say, and be wary of anyone who does. With no published mintage and no market yet, there is no basis for a resale expectation.

Why Can't I Find a Regular California 3 Goldback?

Because California Phase 1 is ¼, 1 and 5 only, per Goldback's announcement of 12 August 2026. The California 3 is a separate Limited Early Release — a graded collectible sold as its own product, not part of the Phase 1 spending lineup. When Alpine Gold's Goldback catalogue was checked on 26 August 2026 it listed the California 3 Limited Early Release alongside the three Phase 1 denominations, and no ordinary ungraded California 3 product. That is one dealer's catalogue at one moment, not a statement about what Goldback plans to issue. Goldback has published nothing about whether an ungraded 3 will ever be released, so we cannot tell you that it will, or that it will not.

Does the August 25 Launch Date Mean My Order Ships on August 25?

No. A launch date is not a ship date, and it is not a delivery date. It is Goldback's own date for when the series became available through authorised distributors. It says nothing about when any individual dealer picks, processes or dispatches your order.

Dealers set and publish their own handling times separately. On 26 August 2026, Alpine Gold's California Goldback product pages stated: "Expect in-stock items to be shipped out in 3-5 business days." — Alpine Gold Exchange, California Goldback product pages (observed 26 August 2026). That is the dealer's own estimate as observed on that date, it is scoped to items the dealer holds in stock, and it carries no publication date. It is not a delivery commitment, and it is not a promise from us. Check the dealer's current shipping wording at the moment you order.

Bottom Line

The dates are confirmed, the lineups are confirmed, and both series officially launched on 25 August 2026 at ordinary Goldback prices. This is no longer a rumour.

What remains unpublished: mintages, and what Phase 2 would contain. Buy now if you want a particular note in hand. If you are buying gold rather than collecting, remember that the per-Goldback rate moves with market conditions, so check the live listing rather than any quoted figure.

Verify before ordering. Prices, availability, denominations and dates are set by Goldback and its distributors and can change. Confirm the live listing before purchase.
