This Is Not Financial Advice
Everything on The Goldback Guide is published for general education and information. It is not financial, investment, legal, tax or accounting advice, and it is not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold anything.
We do not know your circumstances, your goals, your tax position or your risk tolerance. Nothing here is tailored to you. Before making any financial decision, consider taking advice from a qualified professional who does know those things.
What Goldbacks Are, Legally
Goldbacks are privately issued notes containing gold. They are produced by a private company, not by any government or central bank.
- They are not legal tender. Under 31 U.S.C. § 5103, United States coins and currency are legal tender. Goldbacks are not, and no US state has issued a Goldback-specific ruling granting them that status.
- Acceptance is entirely voluntary. No business anywhere is required to accept them, including in states with their own Goldback series.
- General state "specie" or sound-money laws do not confer status on Goldbacks. Those laws concern gold and silver coin and bullion valued on metal content. A Goldback is a polymer note, valued well above its metal content. Do not infer otherwise.
Value and Risk
- Precious-metal prices fluctuate. Gold can fall as well as rise, and Goldback pricing tracks it closely — we have observed the per-Goldback rate move by close to 4% inside a single week.
- You pay a premium over metal content. Goldbacks cost meaningfully more than the melt value of the gold inside them, reflecting manufacture, artwork and distribution. That premium is not automatically recovered on resale.
- Resale markets can be thin. Collectible and graded notes in particular may be slow to sell, and asking prices are not completed sales.
- Nothing here is guaranteed. No return, no appreciation, no buyback price, no liquidity.
- Metal-paid lease income carries counterparty risk. A contractual return depends on other parties performing.
- Private vault insurance is not deposit insurance. It is not FDIC coverage and does not protect against market loss.
Accuracy and Currency of Information
We verify against primary sources and date every figure, but the companies we cover change their published terms without notice — sometimes rewriting entire fee structures with no announcement. We have documented this happening.
Always confirm current prices, availability, specifications and terms directly with the seller before acting. Do not rely on this site, or any guide, as a substitute for checking the live listing and the agreement you are actually being offered.
We make no warranty that content here is complete, current or error-free, and we accept no liability for decisions taken in reliance on it.
